The fronds can grow four to five feet tall. A clump might be six feet wide. Like Boston fern, ‘Macho’ fern likes partial shade and moist soil throughout the growing season. Site Selection for the Macho Fern: Select a site with shaded / semi-sun and well-drained soil. Ferns also adapt well to growing in containers.
Apply a water-soluble balanced fertilizer, such as 20-20-20, starting in the spring when new fronds emerge. Diluting the fertilizer to 1/2 or 1/4 strength to avoids burning the roots. Reapply the fertilizer through the growing season. Landscaping Uses: Ground-cover, foundation planting, surrounding trees, camouflage for leggy plants behind it, shade garden accent.
Plant Place the Macho fern in a spot with bright light, but not full afternoon sunlight. These ferns thrive on porches, balconies, decks or outside areas with afternoon shade during the growing season. Indoor lighting is typically insufficient. Water the Macho fern well and then until the soil dries slightly before watering again from spring through fall. The amount of water needed varies depending on the container’s size, the fern and the surroundings. Never leave the fern sitting in water.
